Sir Tony has spent his career at the intersection of discovery, innovation, and mentorship. Starting his journey as a PhD student at the University of Cambridge, he spent time at the Cambridge MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and New York University Medical Centre, before setting up his lab at the Gurdon Institute in Cambridge. One of the leading figures in the field of epigenetics and cancer, his research has unlocked the fundamental aspects of epigenetic modifications. Tony’s desire to make a difference to peoples’ lives led him to translate his science into tangible impact in the form of anit-cancer drugs, currently in clinical trials.
While deeply committed to research, Sir Tony's vision extends far beyond the walls of academia. Recognizing the need for innovation in translating scientific discoveries into real-world applications, he co-founded several groundbreaking companies, such as Abcam (antibody reagents for academics, sold for $5.7B), Storm Therapeutics (clinical stage first-in-class drug discovery company), Chroma Therapeutics (drug discovery vehicles) and Vellos (a venture builder). In his role as a Venture Partner at Fifty Years, Sir Tony uses his expertise and experience to mentor early-career scientists and entrepreneurs, and inspires the next generation of scientist-founders to change the world.
